A coastal gem with a ruined priory, popular surf beaches, and a lively market, all a quick metro ride from central Newcastle.

Tynemouth was ideal for the kids. The beach was clean, there's a proper old-fashioned high street with cafés and shops, and the ruined castle was surprisingly atmospheric (even if the 6-year-old just wanted snacks). Felt like a real highlight for a low-key afternoon.
