A beautiful historic town with abbey ruins, Georgian squares, and a strong foodie scene.

I really fell for Bury St Edmunds - beautiful old buildings, great independent shops, and the Abbey Gardens were gorgeous. It's very walkable, and I had no problem filling a day on foot. Plenty of options for a solo lunch without feeling awkward.
